The Architecture Poem

Gartner advises to write an enterprise architecture charter, in order to have a clear scope and mandate for the architecture team. I did just that at Thomas Cook, and summarized it as a poem.

The charter itself was very much inspired by these books: 37 Things One Architect Knows, Building Evolutionary Architectures and The Toyota Way: 14 Management Principles from the World’s Greatest Manufacturer. I ended up writing over 100 pages on the architecture practice, so a summary was needed. While I was driving home from an EA workshop, and I was thinking about what we discussed that day, I came up with the architecture poem.

The Poem

Ours is not to do and die
Ours is to reason why

Not to develop or save the day
Nor to manage or complicate

We shall investigate
Decide
Communicate
And Guide
